It's good to know you're being looked after

posted Wednesday, 18 January 2006
The other day at work there was a bit of a scare. One of my colleagues has been taken in to hospital. We were pulled into a room in small groups and given a briefing. Apparently she had a bad form of meningitis. For this reason there were going to be cleaners coming in very soon with face masks and they would be deep cleaning her desk. They were also looking at acquiring vaccine for anyone who wants one.

They didn't hire proper cleaners trained in these things though. Nor did they move those who sit near the poor girl. They just called in the normal night cleaners, who took one look and refused to get involved. Then our wonderful managers decided to move everything off the desk. That way they could clean it and then put everything (still covered in dangerous bacteria) back. In the end our building manager clean the desk with some stuff he found under the sink.

It turns out the girl does not have meningitis (or anything dangerously infectious) after all.

Now there is always soap and paper towels in the gent's and the hot water is working, so I suppose it has done some good.

Did I mention I work in the healthcare industry?

Btw - this is my 300th post! :)

Don't you DARE catch meningitis! What did she end up having, do you know? Sorry you had to go through all that, but yay for soap and hot water. And bath tubs. I want to take a hot bath.

HahaHA! The world is just so full of irony isn't it? Maybe those night cleaners should be put in charge so that the office will run more smoothly!

That is absolutely atrocious, Dan - talk about neglecting duty of care. I'm glad to hear that your colleague is okay, though.
